Reading-GRQ-Discussion- The Art of Indigenous Americans Art History: A century of exhibitions

Discussion Question: Have the expectations of an audience changed since ancient Rome? How has entertainment changed? How have audiences changed?
Many expectations have changed since Roman time. With the expectation of audience, we have size, class, and the reason why they were watching/participating in an event/performance. Since Roman time, audience size has evolved and become a more normal thing. They either have a large or small audience. Audiences were also seated by class and gender. Today, this is not how we go and see movies, Broadway, conventions, etc. The entertainment that the Romans had was way more violent and disturbing than what we have today. Romans had slaughters and very dangerous Games. Today, we have the Super Bowl, and movies, musicals, plays, and TVs in our own homes for anywhere entertainment. Our audiences have changed because we are accepting of who we are, and what color we are, and what gender we are. We don't separate ourselves by class, gender, or race. I believe that we as a society have evolved for the better comparing ourselves to the Romans.

The United States has found a way to celebrate art through Native American culture. The "artistic independence" came from the celebration of Native Art. Native Art was considered anthropology instead of art history, which in the 1970's that changed for the better. Many Ancient and Historical Native Arts became more and more known through having exhibitions and being able to read about the history of the art. Exhibitions started becoming more ambitious and more out of the box because more people knew about the art that was in front of them. Native Art wasn't considered American art to many, but to a museum director that was the opposite. In the article it states, "When visitors traverse the four floors of the Arts of the Americas Wing, from the foundation to the top level they will be able to travel through time as they rise vertically through space from the eras of ancient and Native American art trough the later twentieth century." The takeaway from this is that Native Arts need to have a spotlight, if not, we will lose all of the history and the knowledge that we have gained from this beautiful culture.

Extra Credit:
The Romans had such violent sports because they believed in their religion and how the sport would get them closer to God/ they had a ritual. Chariot Racing was so dangerous, but so loved for entertainment because of religion and the basis of the reason why they race, which is whoever drove the Chariot, would become rich. The drivers were lower classmen, that could become popular. They were celebrities or wealthy men if they would have won the Races. I would think that many audience members maybe appreciated the courage and strength and athleticism of the drivers to the Chariots. Violence and bloodshed happen all the time in our society today and it happens everywhere. The only thing is, we cannot control what everyone does. We are all free people who can do whatever we want, and many think that violence is an option. We cannot enjoy such gruesome events like the Romans. Many children play bloody or gory video games, and we watch movies of the thriller and gore genre, but we can't resort to violence and bloodshed, especially because we have laws to follow, and if we don't follow them, we will have consequences.
